1 / 3Penang Hill Funicular Train Station
📍 Bukit Bendera, Penang
The funicular to Penang Hill runs every 15 minutes with an 8–10 minute ride to the top. Weekend queues routinely hit 45+ minutes on standard tickets; express lane tickets skip the wait entirely.
I recommend visiting early in the morning as they open around 6:30AM. You can go to the counter, buy your ticket, and then head straight inside to wait for the train departure. If I’m not mistaken, the trains depart every 15 minutes, and the ride to the top takes around 8 - 10 minutes. The view from the hill is magnificent! The train and station are well maintained and clean. Definitely a must-visit for tourists when you’re in Penang.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 5 and up who can handle a queue and appreciate panoramic views. Toddlers in strollers need extra vigilance from monkeys — secure all food and bottles before exiting the train. Weekday mornings give the most relaxed experience with manageable crowds.

“We enjoyed our trip up the hill by using the funicular. The qeues can get really busy. Though the lines are moving fast. The Habitat was a bit too expensive for tourists. Beware of the monkeys as they grab food from people. Be especially mindful when you have a baby in a stroller as they will grab their feeding cups or bottles.”

“We had a great day out on Penang Hill. The train was great, and much faster than expected. We went on a Monday lunchtime. We had standard tickets and the waiting time was 45 minutes on the way up, 10 on the way down. Those that purchased fast track tickets literally walked straight to the front of the queue, so this may be worth considering if you can afford it, or think it's worth it. Once up to the top it's a bit confusing as to where to go and what to do. Even the maps aren't clear. Some attractions are free, some are paid for. We just ended up wandering around hoping for the best. The views are absolutely stunning though so that alone is worth the train ticket. There's restaurants at the top though these are significantly more expensive than the little food market that is also there. We ate Nasi Goreng Biasa (fried rice) for just 6 MYR.”

“We visited at 8 am in the morning. Since it was early, there was hardly any crowd and everyone getting tickets could easily get into the first train. We had express lane tickets, so entry both ways was a cakewalk and since we were the first ones to enter, we got the best view seats. It was cloudy with a chill in the air so the experience was all the more amazing. Must visit if you are in Penang.”

Overview
Penang Hill Funicular delivers one of Peninsular Malaysia's best hilltop views via a well-maintained railway. Trains depart every 15 minutes; the ascent takes around 8–10 minutes. Arrive before on weekends to join the first trains with minimal queuing. Express tickets allow walk-in boarding both ways. The summit is cooler and often partially clouded — bring a layer. Monkeys are bold and persistent with food.
