Came here to learn about pewter and the experience was great. The guided tour is actually FOC and I ended up having a tour guide all to myself. Very informative and personal service. I signed up for two courses which cost RM 280 in total. I made one bowl and three keychains to take home. While it seemed expensive at first, you realize pewter is a premium material once you see the prices in the merch shop. They do give you an apron and two certificates since it was two courses, though the hands-on experience of making the items is the real highlight. Definitely worth a visit for the hard work of the guides and the unique craft.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with school-age children who are genuinely curious about craft and heritage. The free guided tour is well-delivered and covers real history β€” Royal Selangor predates Swarovski and holds a royal warrant. The 15-minute tour can feel brief; re-enter the exhibition independently afterwards for a fuller visit.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘The guided tour is free and no advance booking is needed β€” just arrive and join the next available group
⏰Tours run about 15 minutes and can feel fast β€” re-enter the exhibition area afterwards at your own pace to cover what was rushed
🎟️Hands-on workshops produce a finished pewter piece to take home β€” worth booking if older children enjoy making things
πŸš—The souvenir gallery carries exclusive items only available at this headquarters location

β€œA wonderful experience to Royal Selangor and to have James as our guide. We got to learn about the history and the fact that it was one of the first big company to empower women in the workplace. It was more amazing that Royal Selangor was older than Swarovski! Royal Selangor was founded in 1885 by Yong Koon in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, initially as a small pewtersmith workshop. Swarovski was founded ten years later, in 1895, by Daniel Swarovski in Wattens, Austria. The craftsmanship of some of the pieces are a sight to behold. I hope my photos would justify and show the beauty of the craft.”

β€œA very brief and express version of the whole history of the founder, how it grew and became the royal pewterer for the Selangor sultan, and how pewter is melted and sculpted into a luxury item. This is a free guided tour you have to go when you're nearby KL. The guide itself took about 15 minutes, and then you'll enter their gallery to enjoy window shopping. Some items are only available in this HQ.”
