Entry i paid rm5 je. 2 kids (1 baby, 1 5y/o) entered free. Aquariums are very clean and see thru. Got many fish. A lot of clown fish kinds. Got lots of tortoise and big turtle too. Got a section of the big guys (arapaima, aligator gar etc) When i went it just opened for the day so got no crowds. Towards the end of our tour, got a schoolbus of 2ndary students (a bit loud) but acceptable crowd. The pictures they took at the entrance also quite nice, ended up buying 4 pictures worth rm40. Quite small place but offers good bonding experience with the kids. I think it took us ~15mins to finish touring all the place. But we linger, went back and forth, and sat around for about 45mins

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with younger children who enjoy hands-on observation of marine life in a calm, educational setting. The low entry cost makes it accessible for repeated visits. Avoid weekday mornings during school term when large student groups fill the space. Free parking on-site adds to the convenience.

“Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium is a historic and official aquarium in Penang, managed by the Malaysian Fisheries Department. It was established in the early 1980s with the main purpose of education and conservation, focusing on marine life found in Malaysian waters, especially around Penang and the Straits of Malacca. The aquarium is simple and not modern or luxury-style, but it is informative and meaningful. You can see local fish species, turtles, and other marine life native to the region. It is a calm place, not crowded, and well suited for families and children who want to learn about local marine ecosystems rather than entertainment-focused displays.”

“A good place to bring kids to enjoy the aquatic life and scenery.. Admission tickets are cheap, but fair enough with the experience that people will get.. Please don't expect a place like the Akuaria or Underwater World since the tickets are only RM5 for adults, RM2 for kids age 7 to 12 years and free for kids below 7.. Definitely worth it!! Will come again in the future.. 😊”

Overview

Managed by the Malaysian Fisheries Department, AkuaTAR focuses on species found in Malaysian waters and around the Straits of Malacca. Clear acrylic tanks display clownfish, turtles, tortoises, and large freshwater fish like arapaima and alligator gar. Allow 45-90 minutes. Visit early morning when it opens to avoid school group crowds that make the smaller spaces noisy.
