An amazing spot for history enthusiasts who enjoy a touch of the spooky. We visited this place back in 2019, and the tickets were quite affordable. It’s chilling to imagine all the victims of the brutal Japanese army who inflicted such horrific torture here.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children aged 10 and above who have some background in WWII history and can contextualise what they're seeing. The crawl-through tunnel and bunker exploration are hands-on highlights. Younger children may find the content difficult to engage with. Plan as one stop on a broader Penang day — the visit runs 60 to 90 minutes.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡A car is essential — the museum sits on a hilltop with no public transport access
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven ground and tunnel crawling
🎟️Bring your own historical context — on-site explanations are broad and general
🚗The tunnel involves crawling and ladder climbing — factor this in for older or less mobile family members

A hidden gem in Penang Island if you are into the history. The ticket was 38 RM for non-Malaysians, and 22 RM for Malays. There were many heritage sites from the WWII, and an exhibition of war time art works. The scenery was also amazing here.

A good place to learn a decent amount about the japanese occupation from penang's perspective specifically. The information listed is a quite general and broad where you might need to do your own research a bit more. There is a tunnel where you can crawl through and a ladder at the end of it to climb up, which can give a sense of what and how the soldiers have gone through and what they did back then. The structures are still quite intact and well maintained that give you a clear visualistion to their placement and uses.

It was in my bucket list for a long time and I finally made my way there today. It’s rather out of the way, a car is needed to get up there as it’s sitting on the hill. The museum is not well maintain unless if keeping it rustic and unkempt is intentional. While the quarters still maintain its original facade, it would be helpful if there could be more explanation or excerpts of history at each spot. Some explanation was to brief and it doesn’t provide context to the historical episode that happened. I was hoping more would be covered about the the Japanese atrocities during their occupation of Penang as well as highlighting the local resilience stories. Unfortunately, a few pictures of the atrocities did not seem sufficient to concretise the sufferings people went through during those dark period. For MYR38, it is definitely expensive. It’s a go once and never go again scenario. There are so much more to explore and curate but it didn’t live up to its potential. I think fort siloso in Singapore did a better job at curating and keeping the stories alive.

Overview

Penang War Museum occupies a genuine British coastal defence fort later used by Japanese forces during WWII. The site covers tunnels, underground bunkers, prisoner barracks, and a gallery of wartime artwork. Signage is broad rather than detailed — families with a prior grounding in WWII history will get more from the visit. The grounds sit on a forested hill with scenic surroundings. Maintenance leans rustic; some areas appear deliberately weathered.
