Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm
π Teluk Bahang, Penang
A butterfly sanctuary in Teluk Bahang combining an outdoor garden of freely flying tropical butterflies with an extensive indoor discovery centre. Plan three to five hours. Best for children aged five and up.
Entopia was a fantastic place to observe a diverse range of creatures, from a vibrant array of tropical butterflies to exotic species such as the Cat Gecko, Tiger Bat Lily, and Oriental Water Dragon. It was wonderful to see countless butterflies flying freely in the outdoor aviaries before heading into the indoor Cocoon Discovery Centre, where the exhibits were incredibly educational, showcasing a wide variety of butterflies and their pupal stages. At the Mystery Cave, the guide even allowed us to safely place scorpions on our arms. Perhaps the most memorable experience was the Vita Nova session, where we were given the opportunity to release newly emerged butterflies from cups. Watching them take their first flight was truly fascinating. A mustβsee attraction in Penang for anyone interested in the natural world!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with curious children aged five and up who engage well with nature and learning. The outdoor butterfly garden is the standout β butterflies land on visitors freely and the atmosphere is genuinely immersive. The indoor section rewards families who pace themselves. Younger children may lose focus in the more text-heavy indoor areas.

βWe were a bit unsure at first about visiting with other butterfly farm options available on our journey but really glad we decided to do this in the end. The butterfly farm itself was lovely, with engaging activities for the kids and plenty of opportunities to hold butterflies or have them land on you. But what really made the visit worthwhile was the amount of additional animals and insects to view and learn about, both in live exhibits and in the museum sections and art installations. We easily spent over 5 hours here before we finally felt we'd seen all we could. Especially with young kids but they were kept engaged throughout. It was easy to purchase tickets on the door with no queue first thing. The whole experience was relaxed and at your own pace. No food or drink allowed in and no re-entry.β

βVisited it on May. A wonderful experience for our family. The kids were amazed, it truly felt like entering a different world: green, cool, and full of butterflies everywhere. Walking through the butterfly garden was beautiful and calming. During our visit, we even saw the staff safely handling a snake that had appeared in the garden, they managed it quickly and professionally, so everything continued smoothly. Overall, it was a unique, exciting, and memorable visit for the whole family. ββββββ

βModern, fun, educational. I loved that creators understood no one wants to read a lot, so they just places a 2 or 3 interesting facts at stops outside. Inside was more datailed and very well thought through. Inside could be shorter I wanted to read all but was too much info in one time for the brain. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Penang!β

Overview
Entopia runs two distinct sections: an outdoor lush butterfly garden where visitors walk among hundreds of freely flying tropical species, and an indoor discovery centre with detailed exhibits on insects, ecology, and lifecycle. Staff conduct hands-on activities including butterfly releases. The outdoor section is universally praised; the indoor exhibits are content-rich and can become information-heavy for younger visitors. No re-entry allowed.
