Mother's Day jaunt to this mangrove forest for a spot of nostalgic birdwatching and clock up some steps. If you want to see bigger animals, make sure you're in the park early. You might just spot the otter family that lives here. To be here early, why not book and stay in the lovely chalets here. Uncle and Aunty wanted a nice, casual jalan-jalan, and we saw various birds - egrets, herons, kingfishers, monitor lizards, and macaques. We also saw a corporate group doing mangrove planting with Malaysian Nature Society (which runs the park). This place is popular for such activities because it's an easy 45 min drive from Petaling Jaya. Meandering the park, you'll easily get 3-4km worth of walking on flat, level ground. There's a small entry fee which goes towars the park upkeep. If you're game for more wildlife spotting - leave your wheels at the car park and walk up the nearby Melawati Hill. There are Langurs and more Macaques up there. Not touristy enough? You're also near the Sky Mirror Jetty. This is a very "efficient" destination since you get to enjoy nature, history and touristy fun all in one! Excellent lunch places nearby after you've worked up an appetite from all the walking.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children aged 6 and up who have a genuine interest in wildlife and can handle a 3km walk on flat terrain. The mangrove boardwalk section is the most engaging for children β€” mudskippers and crabs are visible from close range. Early morning arrival maximises otter and bird sightings before the heat builds.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Apply DEET-strength mosquito repellent before entering and reapply at the halfway point β€” natural repellents are ineffective here
⏰Arrive at opening time for the best chance of spotting the resident otter family near the water
🎟️Walk the mangrove boardwalk extension β€” the 500m addition reveals crabs and mudskippers not visible from the main trail
πŸš—Collect a trail map from the entrance kiosk and identify the observation tower early β€” it provides the best birdwatching elevation

β€œThis place is great for kids. The path is level, no hills. Good for walks. Peaceful. The loop is 3 km. If you include the mangrove boardwalk it will be 3.5 km in total. Recommended to go on the boardwalk, there you can see mangrove life - colorful crabs and mudskipper (ikan belacak). Good for teaching kids. Near the sungai you can hear otters playing and chatting with each other but cannot see them though. Entrance fee is rm4 per pax. Good to come here in the morning but we went around 11 am it was not that hot. Make sure to bring mosquito repellent!”

β€œWe came here for birdwatching as it’s migration season. Saw some birders recommended this place in some FB groups. Entrance fee is RM4, which is really a small amount for the huge area that is being maintained by Malaysia Nature Society. I hope they get more help to spruce up the area, as they are an NGO. Anyhow, this place has a gazillion mosquitoes that are relentless in their pursuit of your blood - even if you are wearing long sleeves and long pants. The only solution is to ensure you spray yourself with repellant with DEET content. The mozzies will still fly around you, but with DEET they won’t be able to stick to you and bite you. Normal natural mozzie repellants will not work (trust me). Once you can ignore the mozzies around you (thanks to DEET repellant), the nature here is really a sight to behold. We had about 8 new lifers added to our bird list. Came up close n personal with perched Crested Serpent Eagle twice! Saw a lifetime supply of Collared Kingfishers and also spotted Indian Cuckoo, many Yellow-Vented Bulbuls, Ruby-Cheeked Sunbird, Swinhoe’s White Eye, Grey Herons, and even the Dollarbird. Of course there also also macaques, and silver leaf monkeys and the various colourful crabs at the mangrove area. There were only 1 other family we saw while we were there on Christmas Day 2025. A great place but not sure if I will go back because the mozzies are too much to handle, mentally. Although DEET repellants work well in keeping them off you.”

β€œWell preserved nature park. The walkways are nice and wide. We got to see many wildlife. We came early at 845am and its already opened. It took us about 2 hours to do the 3km walk and we also went up the tower to see the birds. Highly recommend.”

Overview

Taman Alam Kuala Selangor is managed by the Malaysia Nature Society across a well-maintained mangrove reserve. The main 3km circuit is flat and suitable for children who can walk independently. Adding the mangrove boardwalk extends the loop to 3.5km and reveals colourful fiddler crabs and mudskippers up close. A bird observation tower provides elevated sightlines across the reserve. Resident otters are spotted regularly by early arrivals.
