Kuala Sepetang Eco Tourism
📍 Kampung Kuala Sepetang, Perak
Private guided eco-tours through Kuala Sepetang's mangrove forest, featuring eagle feeding, kingfisher sightings, fish feeding at the island, and hands-on encounters with puffer fish. Tours run roughly 90 minutes by boat.
I contacted Kuala Sepetang Eco Tourism early and spoke to Mr Khairul, the tour operator. From the very first call, he clearly explained what to expect and I could immediately tell he was a genuinely friendly and passionate person. He was upfront with the pricing and offered a special rate, which I appreciated. Most importantly, this is a private group tour, not the type where you’re lumped together with random members of the public. That alone already sets the experience apart. Throughout the tour, Mr Khairul showed deep knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem. His explanations about bird species, plant life, and the mangrove environment were detailed and easy to understand. He explained fluently in both English and Malay, which made the experience very accessible. Every question we had was answered patiently, and he never rushed through any explanation. During the cruise, we learned about the traditional charcoal-making process using 30-year-old bakau trees, and even stopped to observe an udang fisherman separating his catch. The eagle feeding was a highlight — seeing more than 20 eagles circling and swooping down was impressive. We also stopped by a fish farm, where there was a live demonstration of spit/spear fish, free feeding of tilapia, and hands-on learning with horseshoe crabs and puffer fish. On top of the nature experience, there was a strong historical element. Mr Khairul shared stories about Port Weld as a key charcoal-producing area in the past, supplying fuel for mining machinery, transported by train to the port and shipped out. He also spoke about the social history of the fishing village, which added depth to the tour. The whole experience took about 1.5 hours, and it’s worth checking with him on the best timing, as tide conditions do affect what you get to see. Overall, this was a well-structured, educational, and genuinely engaging eco-tour. If you’re looking for a meaningful Kuala Sepetang experience rather than a rushed sightseeing trip, this is the one to go for.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with school-age children who engage with nature and ask questions. The puffer fish handling and eagle feeding are the kind of hands-on moments that stay memorable. Younger children can participate with adult supervision.

“It was the highlight of our trip in Malaysia! Khairul was so knowledgeable about the mangrove ecosystem and how the village of Kuala Sepetang coexists with the forest. I could really feel that Khairul cares about the biodiversity and the community, which was very enlightening given the state of over tourism in so many of the neighboring regions. During the boat ride, we saw so many wildlife like monkeys and birds, we even spotted the rare blue kingfishers. The seafood that we had after the boat ride (restaurant was called Crosview) was also exceptional and their service was top notch! Khairul was the best tour guide we could ask for, I felt like a grade school student again on a nature excursion! If you are planning on a trip to Taiping I will 100% recommend.”

Overview
Kuala Sepetang Eco Tourism runs private boat tours led by guide Khairul through mangrove waterways with genuine wildlife encounters — eagles in groups of 40–50, blue kingfishers, puffer fish handling, and fish feeding at a mid-river island. The evening sunset tour adds atmospheric value. Khairul's knowledge of mangrove ecology and the coexistence of the Kuala Sepetang settlement with the forest makes the commentary substantive rather than surface-level.
