π Banda Hilir, Melaka
A compact, sheltered museum ideal for older kids and teens with an interest in architecture and culture. English translations throughout make it accessible for all families visiting Melaka.
It took me just about 45 mins to complete the museum tour and it didn't disappoint me. Historical buildings are my favourite items and I wanted to be here longer but it was late and that's the only time left for me (coz it was my last day in Melaka). Thank you to the museum's staffs including the museum's guard, for their length of efforts, patiently waiting for me completing my tour around the museum before closing the museum for that day. π Thank you very much β€οΈ One of the best museums I've ever been in Bandaraya Melaka! π

βVery nice museum. You don't only get lovely scale models of the architecture, but a description of how different cultures choose building sites, plan their buildings, and use the different spaces. European influences and immigrant influences are explored as well as technological differences. When you see how beautiful they could make a water tower in the 19th century it might make you despair a little about more recent architecture! I would definitely recommend this for anyone who, like me, likes to slow down when driving to admire old buildings, or anyone who wants to learn more about the temples that are dotted all over Malaysia. The building itself is also one of the exhibits, dating from the Dutch period, with lovely terracotta floors and lovely wooden features. English translations included on every sign for international visitors.β

βThe museum feels lifeless. While the information and models are undoubtedly impressive, there is simply too much information, and the poor lighting inside the galleries makes the experience far less appealing. Improving the lighting would make a huge difference.β

βWhile the museum has received many positive reviews, especially from international touristsβ¦ I would like to share a different perspective based on my visit. As someone who appreciates architecture, I was eager to learn more about the evolution of Malaysian buildings and structures. However, the museumβs content mainly focuses on historical architecture, with very limited information on developments beyond the year 2005. Even the modern architecture section in this museum contains information thatβs βnot so modernβ. Understand that this is a museum, but given that itβs already 2025, it could benefit from showing more contemporary architecture such as Merdeka 118 and Exchange 106, as well as incorporating discussions on how modern technology is shaping design and construction today. This would not only enhance the educational experience but also appeal to a broader audience; both local and international, young and old. While the museum is clean, comfortable, the staffs are friendly, the lack of digital payment options (no cards, QR codes, or e-wallets) felt outdated. It would be wonderful to see more investment directed toward updating the exhibits, lesser words, more pictures and displays and improving the visitor experience overall. Overall time spent was 30 minutes.β
