I feel like this is a hidden gem museum in Alor Setar. I spent hours in this museum as I was enjoying reading every details inside it. It was detailed but easy to understand, plus the fun facts too. All floors were interesting to explore. I've learnt so much on the paddy industry in Kedah - history, process, tools, prominent leaders in it and etc. For future development, hope to see it more interactive - fused with AI or to have documentaries looped too. All in all, I enjoyed it. Keep it up! 😊

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with school-age children interested in Malaysian agriculture and visual storytelling. The rotating mural room is genuinely impressive and worth planning the visit around. Families with elderly members, prams, or children who struggle with stairs should know there is no lift access. Budget 1-2 hours to cover the exhibits properly.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Allow 1-2 hours to read exhibits across all three floors properly
No lift access — all floors reached by stairs only
🎟️The top-floor rotating mural room is the highlight; do not leave before reaching it
🚗Bring a camera — the rotating panorama offers strong photography angles

Great place to let children know about the history of paddy in Malaysia. Quite informative. It also has a simulated paddy room that rotates slowly, showing an ENORMOUS mural with models showing the view over the paddy fields. Highly recommended if you like art, history and photography.

Nestled at the foothills of Gunung Keriang near Alor Star, the Kedah Paddy Museum stands as both a cultural landmark and a visual delight for visitors interested in Malaysia’s agricultural heritage. This expansive three-storey museum is dedicated to the story of paddy — from the seeds in the field to the staple rice on dining tables — and celebrates Kedah’s reputation as the Rice Bowl of Malaysia. The museum’s most captivating feature awaits on the top floor - a 360-degree revolving platform surrounded by a massive panoramic mural. Painted by a team of artists, this continuous mural beautifully depicts the lush paddy fields, kampung landscapes, villages, and surrounding countryside of Kedah. As the platform gently rotates, visitors seated comfortably can absorb the entire scene in continuous motion — a truly immersive way to experience the state’s iconic rice plains. Inside the building, rice motifs and artistic details are woven into the architecture — from banisters to decorative elements — echoing the museum’s agricultural theme. Exhibits throughout the three levels present tools, interactive displays and stories that span traditional and modern rice cultivation practices, offering educational insights for all ages. -Accessibility Caution- While the museum dazzles with its unique rotating exhibit and thoughtful design, accessibility is limited. The most rewarding attraction — the top rotating viewing level — can only be reached by climbing multiple flights of stairs. There is no full lift access to the upper floors, and reports note that even the small lift present serves only the ground floor area. This makes the museum unsuitable for visitors with mobility challenges, elderly individuals, or those with weak knees. Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and consider their physical comfort before attempting to explore all three floors of this remarkable cultural site.

Nice place to visit to understand more about paddy development in Kedah. All display are a bit aged and rather static. The revolving 360° experience hall is great. However could be more interactive with some small games or movie/theater following the latest technology trend to make it more lively.

This museum in Alor Setar documents Malaysia's paddy heritage from seed to harvest across a three-storey building. Exhibits are detailed and accessible, written to hold children's attention. The standout is the top-floor rotating room — a slow-moving 360° panoramic mural with scale models showing traditional paddy field life. Multiple flights of stairs connect all floors; no lift access.
