One of the beautiful place in Penang. Take a bus from jetty 204 to reach near lower station of Penang Hill. Funicular train ticket can buy from the entrance counter or one day before online ticket booking. Price is different for Malaysian residents and non-resident. Funicular train takes you to the upper station of the hill. You can opt for hiking through trails. Public holiday and weekend will be crowded, at least an hour of waiting for funicular train. Plenty of food options at the top of hill. After reaching the top of hill, walk around through dedicated trail path to experience nature. Trail path A, B, C and D is good. Beautiful penang city view and sea view from the top of the hill. Paid access 60RM to the habitat and Curits Crest tree top walk 360 degree view. At the end it is worth visiting.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children aged 6 and above who enjoy scenic train rides, wildlife spotting, and moderate walking. Younger children can manage the summit strolls with adult support. Express funicular tickets are near-essential on weekends and public holidays — standard queues have been reported at several hours.

“The Penang Hill Funicular Railway was a truly spectacular experience. The funicular itself feels like a piece of engineering art-smooth, scenic, and beautifully maintained. The ride up is exciting, and watching the landscape unfold as you ascend is unforgettable. At the top, Penang Hill offers breathtaking panoramic views that make the entire journey worthwhile. The cool breeze, lush greenery, and sweeping vistas create a peaceful yet awe-inspiring atmosphere. A must-visit when in Penang. Catch is if you see long ques worth taking the Express lane tickets as it helps you get the best view from inside the Funicular and saved time! For us the best part became petting a capybara!”

“Great place for a hike. There are multiple trails of different effort levels, gradients and directions. I took the 1.5 hour one and saw monkeys on my route. When you get to the top you can effortlessly stroll around to see the different sights, the flora and wildlife and also get food or drinks as you need. It is reasonably priced food and very good local quality. The ride down takes less than 10 mins. I loved the view from the top - a chance to see the whole island and it's surroundings.”

“The place is definitely worth visiting and offers a great experience. It is highly recommended to book tickets in advance and arrive as early as possible. Opting for the express lane can save hours of waiting time, as regular queues can be very long. Once inside, take your time to hike and explore the area properly to fully enjoy what the place has to offer.”

Overview

Penang Hill's funicular railway is one of the world's steepest, climbing through forested slopes to a summit significantly cooler than the city below. At the top, walking trails wind through flora and fauna — monkeys are regularly spotted. Panoramic views across Penang Island are the centrepiece attraction. Multiple trails of varying difficulty allow families to choose their own pace, from easy strolls to 1.5-hour hikes.
