1 / 3REXKL
📍 City Centre, Kuala Lumpur
A repurposed 1940s cinema in central KL housing indie bookstores, local creator stalls, photo booths, and cafe options. Best for families with tweens and teens who enjoy slow, exploratory visits.
RexKL is one of the most unique spots in Kuala Lumpur — a creative space built inside an old cinema, giving it a very raw and artistic vibe. The atmosphere is calm, aesthetic, and perfect for chilling, working, or just exploring something different from typical malls. There are small indie bookstores, cafés, and local brands, which makes it feel very community-driven. Great place if you like peaceful hangouts, creative energy, and Instagram-worthy corners. Not ideal if you’re looking for loud nightlife — this place is all about slow vibes and culture.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with tweens and teens who enjoy discovering independent culture rather than structured entertainment. The calm, creative environment rewards slow exploration — plan for two or more hours. Younger children without sustained interest in browsing and art will find little to engage them physically.

“Had such a good time at RexKL with my daughter. We came for lunch and ended up staying for hours. There’s so much to see — cool little shops, local creators, fun geek stuff, random unexpected finds, and that amazing bookstore space. You can just walk around and discover something new at every corner. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, not pretentious at all. We even made a few new Vietnamese friends while hanging out. Definitely one of those places in KL where you can just chill, explore, and enjoy the atmosphere. Would come back again and again ;)”

“I think this is a communal space, because there’s so much to see and do in one building. When you enter, the photo box is immediately on the right side, I tried it and it was super fun! I think it costs around 20/25RM for a strip of photos plus digital files. Right next to it, there is a small shop with cute, antique-style items. I love the vibe here, it feels very young, creative, and energetic. Definitely a perfect place to hang out and explore!”

Overview
REXKL preserves the raw bones of an old cinema — exposed brick, high ceilings, original signage — and fills it with independent retailers, local artists, and communal spaces. The photo booth at the entrance produces strip prints plus digital files. An indie bookstore anchors one corner; a food court with mostly Western options plus specialty cafes covers meals. Every visit surfaces something new to discover.
