Penang Ferry Museum
π George Town, Penang
Museum built inside a restored Penang ferry, tracing the island's maritime history through ferry models, video exhibits, and era-specific artefacts. Engine room tours available as an upgrade.
I used to take ferry rides in Penang when I was young and when I heard they restored one of the old ones into a museum, I had to visit. Itβs really one of the best museums we have here in Malaysia. Very well curated, super informative, fun and interactive displays of the Penang Ferry history - video content, lots of interesting reading material, replicas , and a tour of the actual boiler room (extra fee) and access to the captainβs room at the rooftop. The staff were so knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely enthusiastic to share their experiences and talk about the ferries. Some say the ticket entrance is bit expensive (RM29) for Malaysians but if you can afford 2 chagee teas, this is worth it and more.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 6 and above who enjoy hands-on maritime exhibits and can manage steep internal stairs. Adults with memories of the Penang ferry service will find the nostalgia particularly strong. The full-access engine room ticket adds meaningful depth for older children and teens interested in mechanical history.

βThe Penang Ferry Museum is a very interesting and enjoyable place to visit. It showcases different models of ferries from various eras, highlighting how the design, technology, and style have evolved over time. The art effects and displays are well presented, making the experience engaging and easy to understand. The guides are friendly, approachable, and always willing to explain the exhibits in detail. Their explanations make the visit even more meaningful and informative. Overall, it is a wonderful place to learn about the history of the Penang ferry service, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Penang.β

βA great place to visit.. visitation price is steep but nevertheless worth the price. A good way to preserve history and gone were the fabulous days that cars could board the ferry to go to island and from mainland and vice versa. Educational for both adults and kids alike and a walk down memory lane. A casual of at least an hour could be spent here. Kids would have a great time with the diorama, model ships and engine room visitation.β

βmid Feb 2026 Went with my mother (in 80s). Glad that she could still climb stairs a bit, slowly that can be steep. Visited on the weekend and it turned out to be lovely (air-con inside). Artifacts and ferry models are well displayed, with explanation, though my mother needed interpretation from me (no Chinese yet). She nodded and still remember from her childhood memory. There are model that moves also. Fabulous for the youngs to actually see the structure and how-to. Bravo to the builders. Tickets are very reasonable for the locals. Many photos shared are as what we saw. Highly recommended. A gift shop at the end, as many places and would make a nice memory to have also. Brings back so much beautiful memory and how much the society have evolved. Parking at the spot appears to be on the pricey end for a one entry charge. Visit takes about 1-2 hours, 2+ hours if you have the full visit ticket (high price) that allows you to go into the ferry belly too as I could see from some shared photos. The wall 2D screen cinema was also very nice and made clearer what was seen earlier. There are slides of ferry construction plan - amazing, indeed as they are in good condition. Engineers and technicians will be fascinated. History does teach a lot, after all. Bravo and thank you to the friendly who were there to explain and attended to us. There is a kid's corner (adult can enjoy too), paper folding ferry room to have a little rest (before more adventure. There is an open cafe (though not operating in mid-day) at the ferry top, overlooking the strait. Would be nice in the evening ?β

Overview
Penang Ferry Museum occupies a restored vessel and covers the island's ferry service history from early operations through to the current bridge era. Exhibits include scale models of ferries across different decades, video installations, and artefact displays with written explanations. The engine room is accessible on a full-access ticket. Stairs between levels are steep β mobility-sparse visitors and very young children should before purchasing. Air conditioning runs throughout.
