📍 Ipoh, Perak
A free guided tour through a restored Hakka townhouse exploring tin mining history. Only one tour daily — advance online booking required, no walk-ins accepted.
Mr. Leong guided us through this tour. He shared many interesting facts about the Hakka (translate as “Guests”). The opium smoking exhibit brought back memories of my childhood day. This is a “must see” tour in Ipoh. Need to register online early as there is only one tour a day at 11 am. Tour is free but donations are welcome. It’s not suitable for visitors with walking disability as there are many steps to the 2nd & 3rd floor. This is a old building but very well maintained with generous donations.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with school-age children who engage with history and storytelling. Mr. Leong's entertaining, humorous delivery keeps kids genuinely interested. The one-hour duration and air-conditioned space work well for older children. Families with prams or mobility challenges will find the staircase a barrier — plan accordingly.

“An absolute delight! Mr. Leong is our guide extraordinaire - enthusiastic, charismatic, spontaneous, informative - a natural storyteller! It was such an eye-opener even for an Ipoh-born & bred native. The men’s club turned museum is chock full of quirky, humorous and obscure tidbits. The architecture and furnishings are exquisite Nanyang-style. The aged exhibits are richly nostalgic. A definite must-see, must-experience for anyone visiting the “City that Tin Built”! But do book ahead.”

“We booked this free tour online in advance, and I highly recommend showing up on time to respect the guide and other guests. We were lucky to have Mr. Leong as our guide — he was funny, interactive, and very informative. The tour lasts about an hour, and the best part is that most of it is in an air-conditioned area, which makes it super comfortable. At the end, you’re encouraged to donate (totally optional) to help maintain the museum. A great experience for anyone visiting!”

“My first time to this place as an Ipohite. My family members have been multiple times bringing visitors here whenever they pop by. Reservation is required and can be done online. The tour is conducted in English and done professionally with some humor thrown in. Tour lasts exactly one hour and is not too draggy and boring. The museum is pretty well manicured considering it is a private initiative. Kudos and keep it up!!!”
